3 out of 5 stars Counting the Cost of Convenience   August 1, 2008
David Ross (Rochester, NY USA)
Taster's choice decaff is a pleasant mild tasting instant coffee. For travel, camping or long term storage these sticks are a clever packaging option since the plastic lined sticks will keep the coffee fresh and help to avoid making a mess. This is apparently the same coffe as Nescafe Taster's Choice Instant Coffee, Naturally Decaffeinated, 7-Ounce Canisters (Pack of 3) but at more than twice the price. At the current price of $24.0 for a pack of 144 (total) coffee sticks the price per serving is a rather reasonable $0.17. The price per ounce of the coffee in this form is about $2.80 which more than doubles the price of the same coffee in 7 oz canisters.

If you enjoy Nescafe instant decaff you might want to buy this for travel or to take to work if you drink your coffee black and have easy access to hot water. It is easy to tear open the stick and pour out the coffee making this a convenient low mess option unless you also need to carry creamer and sugar. Keep in mind that that the sticks are sized for a six oz cup rather than a 12 oz mug.

An interesting concept would be to offer an assortment of coffee six packs of flavored and non flavored regular and decaff coffees that a host could offer to guests for example. In my case I don't see any need to have 144 mini packs of the same instant coffee that I can buy in a canister. A couple of these mini six packs in different flavors would be good to have on hand however.

This format of 24 six packs is preferable to though slightly more expensive than the dual 80 pack format with a total of 160 sticks Nescafe Taster's Choice Instant Coffee, Decaffeinated, .059-Ounce Single Sticks, 80-Count Boxes (Pack of 2).

Everyone whom I know, who drinks instant coffee, says "Taster's Choice"
is the best. I heartily agree! (Even Kroger's 100% Columbian Freeze-
Dried Coffee doesn't compare!)

Decaffeinated coffee has a distinct advantage -- no caffein! Caffein
cannot only be give you the jitters, and be, eventually, bad for your
heart, but it also, I have heard, can make you SHORTER! (I researched this alarming side-effect on several medical websites....and yes, it's
sadly true!) Now, being short is NOT necessarily a bad thing, (a cousin
of mine is 4'9" -- at the age of 35, having been short all her life. I myself am only 5"1', so I am definitely NOT putting anyone down here.
Still, my sister is 5'7"....and, romantic me has ALWAYS yearned for the
hight and body of a fashion model. Not everyone wants this, of course
-- and I definitely feel everyone is entitled to live their own lives, their own way! This, of course, includes me....and, personally, if
anything can help ME be taller, (or at least, not any shorter), I'm all
for it! For me, (and others who would rather not be short), anyway.....

Which is why I have recently resolved to drink regular coffee ONLY when
need an burst of energy, and drink decaffeinated (instant) coffee, more than I have in the past...

I totally adore the taste of Taster's Choice Decaffinated! As I can't
afford to buy it all the time, I guess I'll just mix it in an empty instant coffee jar -- 2 parts Taster's Choice Instant, with one part Kroger Instant. When a special occasion arises, however...I know I'll treat myself to 100% Taster's Choice Decaffeinated!

The small packettes offered here are neat! They keep the instant decaffeinated (or perhaps more accurately, the FREEZE-DRIED decaffeinated), instant coffee, absolutely fresh, without refrigeration, until it is used. I recommend them when one is at an office party, or with other people one does not know too well. Sadly, they only contain enough for a 6 oz cup of coffee...and most people I know like at least a 14 oz, (and sometimes, a 20 oz., cup). And these little packettes ARE expensive. Of course, if you don't have to watch your budget too closely, they are an ideal little convenience. However........

Sadly, all "on-the-go" products are more expensive than regular sizes.
If I were to take Taster's Choice Decaffeinated Instant on a family trip, or a trip with very good pals -- and knew I wouldn't want to take an entire 4, or more ounce jar -- I'd buy the biggest Taster's Choice instant freeze dried coffee I could find...and a FUNNEL! With this funnel, (and a spoon), I'd carefully transfer the instant freeze-dried coffee into an empty, (and well-washed and dried out), spice container. You know, the (hopefully glass) spice containers, which have plastic inner covers, dotted with holes in them, for pouring. They come in sizes of 2 up to 32 ounces, and I'd choose the size needed most for my trip.
I'd cover up most of the holes, leaving only those which would sprinkle the coffee easily into my -- and my road companion's -- cup(s)! Is this being unnecessarily stingy? Well, the other option here would be to get a smaller size of a cheaper coffee...NOT Taster's Choice! I LOVE Taster's Choice, (especially the decaffeinated), but it IS more expensive than many other brands. This way, I can drink my Taster's Choice Decaffeinated....and keep the extra change, (probably for buying more of the larger size of Taster's Choice Decaffeinated!), when I got home!

This is not to say these little packettes have no uses at all. As I mentioned above, they are great for office parties! They would also, I think, be delightful little favours, for when a baby is born! For, though coffee has opponents, it has not nearly as many bad things said about it as tobacco has. (There are more and more advantages in coffee being discovered every day. Not so with tobacco....) Anyway, giving out these small, semi-cigar-shaped packettes, (instead of real cigars), might start a new trend, when babies are born! Use them wherever you think best....but try, also, to "funnel" some Taster's Choice Decaffeinated from a large jar, into a smaller one. To save some money. So you can buy even MORE delicious Taster's Choice Decaffeinated Freeze-Dried Coffee!

I have tried so many instant coffees, the list is endless. But Nescafe's Taster's Choice Instant Decaf is by far the best. A smooth coffee with full flavor. Since I only drink one cup of caffeinated coffee a day, Taster's Choice Instant Decaf let's me have all the coffee I want any time, day or evening. The single sticks are very convienent. I use them mostly at work and school, but also at home! So Packable I even took them to Russia with me to stave off all the tea time caffeine.
