5 out of 5 stars Cusinart DGB-900BC Makes great coffee-is easy to clean   January 9, 2009
J. Rudolph (Fairfax, VA)
We bought this as an upgrade from our Cusinart Grind and Brew Thermal-mainly because, although we liked the machine, it was a bear to clean everyday. Consequently we had stopped grinding beans and used it only with ground coffee. Since we had purchased it to enjoy the advantage of the great taste from ground beans-it sort of defeated the purpose. The burr grinder is much better than the other type on the older machine AND it is easy to clean. The coffee is wonderful and the stong, medium and weak adjustments do what they say. Makes a BIG difference and allows you to choose how you like your coffee. So far we now have it ALL! Highly recommend this Cusinart.

4 out of 5 stars Great coffee - easy and well designed   January 6, 2009
J. Hendricks (Portland, OR)
I think this is a great product. Yes, the coffee pours out a little slow, but it's a sacrifice for maintaining heat. The other gripe is aligning the grind arrows on the filter cover. I'm not sure what would happen if I didn't - or a guest did not. Some people say the machine aligns itself. If that's so, then I'm happy - I'm sure we'll test this at some point. I don't agree with the reviews on using more coffee beans than needed. Seems right on to me and the result is perfect so far (only 10 brews made). Easy, fun to use, and get fresh ground coffee every time. Good engineering, ok documentation, but overall the best coffee maker I've ever had. I was worried about the noise of the grinding waking me up prior to the alarm in the morning, but it's not bad - hasn't been a problem. Enjoy!

2 out of 5 stars Dissapointed   January 2, 2009
Needs AM Coffee (Seattle, WA USA)
I've had this coffee maker for a month now and am totally disappointed with it. Do not buy this coffee maker if you think it will save you any time. The setup and cleaning process is way more time consuming than my last coffee maker where I ground the beans manually. The fine coffee particles jam the passage way between the grinder and filter and it is not easy to clean out. This must be done weekly. Another annoying problem is that if it gets unplugged the clock and timer gets reset. Something I usually don't notice until the morning when there is no coffee (same with the jam). The grinder is really loud and doubles as my wake up alarm in the morning. It looks cool which is why my wife bought it but I'm stuck figuring out why I don't have coffee in the morning.

3 out of 5 stars A few noticable issues   December 29, 2008

I have been using the Grind and Brew system formerly from Cuisinart. Although it was a blade grinder, it was ok. There is something both of these units fail to do. They both cannot adjust the grind of the coffee although you can control the amount of coffee you use with the grind and brew system that uses the blade.

This Burr Grinder system fails for me in two areas. First, I thought because it had a strong, medium and mild brew settings, that the grind would be finer for the Strong setting. Espresso grind for example is like fine sand for better and stronger brew. This automatic grinder does not vary the grind at all no matter which setting used. It only uses coarse setting that is actually much coarser than a typical grind for auto drip in my opinion. Also, because the auto fill from the beans grinds automatically the only way to get more flavor and deeper brew is to set the amount of cups to double of what is required. For example, I use 4 cups water and use a setting of 8 at strong setting to get my needed results, therefore I am using quite a bit more coffee than needed from my former grind and brew system which produced a finer grind on it's own. (Blade Grinder's are considered inferior though for flavor)

The second issue is the Strong, Medium and Mild settings. I don't think it does anything but regulate the water temperature. It does nothing with the grind. Also, it appears that there is a heating element at the base of the coffee maker but it shuts down after a few minutes. Due to the thermal carafe, I don't think it's needed, but I was surprised how hot the base did get which led me to believe there was a heating element there.

So to finalize.....I believe it brews nicely, but no control on the grind which I feel limits the unit to waste more beans than needed. The settings for Mild - strong etc do nothing with the grind. I have not tested this unit with other beans with a stronger roast, so that is next. I can't exactly put my old grind and brew away, since I can regulate the amount of coffee I use. Perhaps Cuisinart there is a way to control the burr grinder and set it manually to the perfect grind...but I do not see it anywhere on the unit nor in it's manual.

5 out of 5 stars So far...we're loving this coffee grinder/brewer!!!   December 28, 2008
C. Stiles (Delaware)
I did a lot of research before deciding on the Cuisinart Grind-and-Brew...and so far, we are very pleased. It was very easy to get up and running with this unit. The grinder does a great job, and we're happy with the resulting brew. (We roast our own coffee beans, so we're kind of picky about what we drink.) The burr grinder is not too noisy; the carafe keeps the coffee hot enough for me several hours later; and yes, while the stream from the carafe is a bit slow, so what...it's convenient to not have to turn the lid to pour. All in all, it's a very user-friendly machine; easy to program (is there anything better than hearing your coffee grind and start to brew immediately after your alarm goes off?); and nice and sleek looking on the kitchen counter.
