A good read September 22, 2008 C. Hamblin (Havana, IL USA) I enjoyed Through the Grinder. I have to admit, I was a Hannah Swensen (Joanne Fluke) mysteries fan and was searching for a series to tide me over until the next "dessert mystery" comes out. I think I might have found it. It's a light mystery/romance. I like the fact it isn't overly graphic or smutty.
Great Recipes - That's all She Wrote September 8, 2008 Eclectic Booklover (Any Town, USA)
Through the Grinder by Cleo Coyle is the second Coffeehouse Mystery featuring Clare Cosi. I read the first book a few years back, and decided to try the rest for some quick easy reads. I like the fact that are some great coffee recipes are featured in these books. In a nutshell, in book #2 we find The Village Blend has started offering a singles night with speed-dating, and one after another, women who frequent the blend are committing suicide soon after having a cup of the Blend's famous brews. What's up with that? We also see that Clare is terrified at the thought that her twenty year old daughter Joy is thinking about online dating. So she decides to try it for herself, and ends up finding someone perfect for her. I guess I feel disappointed after reading this quick cozy mystery. It is not the author's fault, but I've just read several wonderful pieces of literature, so this book just seemed to be silly. I do plan on reading the rest of the series as I have them on my shelf. I promise to remind myself this is "just for fun".
A little disappointing August 20, 2008 N. Montgomery (California, USA) Having read 'On What Grounds' and enjoying the way the series started out, I decided to pick up 'Through the Grinder'. I like that the book gives a lot of details about coffee and different ways to prepare coffee but it does get to be a little too much. A few descriptions are fine but the author(s) added an in-depth description EVERY time coffee was made. The details were interesting and I learned a lot about coffee from reading this book but it seemed like all of those details would have been better suited for an educational book, not a mystery novel. Also, I don't like the main character's situation. She's been divorced from her ex-husband for a while but she still lives with him while trying to meet someone new? It's a little weird. I liked that the author(s) showed things from the murderer's point of view and dropped a couple of hints through out the book but when the murderer was revealed at the end, it really didn't fit with the way the murderer was portrayed throughout the book...there almost seemed to be a gender conflict (you'll see what I mean at the end of the book) but maybe I was just confused. The ending was also pretty depressing. I was a little disappointed with this book but I will read the rest of the series and hope that it gets better.
Through the Grinder August 5, 2008 Barbara A. Cheatham Great easy reading mystery book. Characters are interesting and the "who done it" is not easily guessed until the author wants the reader to know.
Definitely dark and a bit dull July 3, 2008 New Yorker living in TX (Austin, TX) It is darker and drearier than the others in the series. The characters were all fairly flat in this one. The "Death Row" art gallery was absolutely vile. I prefer the lighter mysteries without the gory bits. I will keep reading the series hoping this was a one off thing.
